The word gay has become a different kind of soft slur. It still refers to homosexuals, and it still implies ‘effeminate,’ but it has also gained a more general sense, it can mean something that is “not worthy of attention, waste of time, stupid or idiotic; i.e. You're so gay! That was the lamest joke ever!” (Urban Dictionary).
OUT/TAKES is an inventory of names of respected queer individuals, both historical and mythological (from saints to generals, from gods to artists), that are juxtaposed with the word ‘gay’ (written with putty). The combination is ambiguous, between pantheon and mobbing.
