Crimes Against Love: You Are The Problem
Kabine Nadir, Istanbul, Turkey, 2013.
200 photographs of damaged ancient sculptures (100 from Istanbul’s archeological museum, 100 from the basis of the obelisk on Sultanahmet) plus texts that describe recent homophobic violence in Turkey.
The images of scarred statues evoke those who were silenced – they are their shrouds. The work struggles to remember, which is to fight the concerted effort to minimize, to dilute, and to forget.
The piece is part of the series Crimes Against Love, which dealt previously with homophobia in Brazil (http://cyriacolopes.com/crimes-against-love/ ) and in the United States (http://cyriacolopes.com/what-will-you-be-when-you-grow-up ).
